Elizabeth has set Nicole, Beth, Valerie and me the challenge of wearing a pencil skirt for this week’s Five Take… challenge.
A pencil skirt is – according to all fashion related items I read – an essential piece in a woman’s wardrobe. This simple item is supposedly meant to answer all dilemmas of how to be smart yet sexy, timeless yet funky and for a brief while I didn’t believe I owned one! That was until I cleared out the wardrobe and found an old one I used to wear when I worked at my previous job 2.5 years ago. I say old, its actually in perfect condition and looks brand new. Reason 299 of why my no shopping ban is a very good idea!
Pencil skirt – Simply Be circa 2008
Peter Pan collared dress (worn as top) – ASOS curve
Cardigan – Evans circa 2007
Tights – Simply Be
Brogues – ASOS
I paired the skirt with the Peter Pan collar dress I feel well and truly out of love with last week, but this time tucked it in to become a camisole. I used Beth’s suggestion of wearing it with a cardigan and put on a pair of brogues to pull the outfit together. Its a somewhat smarter outfit than I normally wear to work and as such I was asked by a number of people if I was going for an interview (note to self: must be smarter when dressing for work!).
Wearing the ASOS dress this way is going to be my preferred choice from now on. The dress works much better as a camisole and the embellished collar adds something quirky to the whole outfit. Do you have any items that you wear a remix to bring new life to them?
Don’t forget to go and read how the other ladies have styled their pencil skirts:

Love it! The tights are fab, too!
Thank Valerie! I was a little worried that the tights merged with the shoes… ??
Yes ! You have found the perfect way to wear this dress . You look so smart in this outfit , I actually think this outfit is my all time favourite of yours xxx Jo xx I love the skirt too xx
Really? Thanks Jo! Maybe I should wear this style of skirt more often – people always give me the nicest compliments when I wear pencil type skirts! Its a petty they aren’t a natural item for me in my wardrobe!
I love this outfit and the brogues top it off perfectly.
Personally I am happy to wear a pencil skirt in denim but I can’t do it in black. I think it comes from wearing too many of them in the 80′s and early 90′s!!
Thanks Sarah. I would love a denim pencil skirt! I have my Beth Ditto one but I’m not sure if you can call that a pencil skirt… :s
ha! I love that you were asked whether you were interviewing, that’s so funny
My colleagues are so suspicious! If anyone comes in a slightest bit smart you are automatically going for an interview!
Guess that’s what happens if you are allowed to wear what you like to work!
You look so sophisticated!
Cheers Elizabeth! I don’t think I have ever been called sophisticated before! I like it! Much better than being described as “cute”… I hate being called cute. The tomboy in me rebels at the word.
Woah! I am in awe how you took the dress to make it into a top and I think it looks 10000 times better that way! I think ASOS should make it into a top. I don’t know but I wasn’t in love with the cut of the dress and I wish it had sleeves but you are looking wonderful in this ensemble!
Thanks Merry! I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out as well.
